Common Reading Experience

Each year, a committee selects a book with diversity, equity, and inclusion themes to serve as the Common Reading. For fall 2022, the selection is The Ground Breaking: An American City and Its Search for Justice by Scott Ellsworth. The book becomes a required text in UCOL1200 First-Year Seminar. Typically, the author visits campus in October to give an open lecture as well as to meet with the freshman and sophomore Levine Scholars classes. In 2022-23, the book will also be read and discussed by campus-based book clubs in Athletics and Atkins Library. We also plan to schedule a panel discussion linking the themes of The Ground Breaking to Charlotte's "hidden history."
