Creation of Disability Theatre Corse

August 15, 2021
I created a new course, Disability Theatre, that focuses the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities as they try to become fully engaged in the discipline of theatre. Goals include: students will investigate how those with disabilities are portrayed in dramatic literature and contemporary theatre; compare the challenges faced by those with disabilities to other order-served & marginalized groups such as race and gender; investigate our ethical obligations to include technicians, actors, directors, designers and other theatre teammates in productions; in the search for inclusivity, how do we address the stare factor many people have when viewing fellow humans with non-standard bodies; How can non-disabled theatre practitioners become involved with professional theatre companies specializing in disability theatre; Identify sources of bias toward individuals with disabilities and articulate and evaluate methods for mitigating those biases.
