Engineering Academic Pathways

The Engineering Academic Pathways project provides funding for scholarships that support low income, academically talented students to study engineering majors at UNCC. In addition to supporting students with scholarships, the project applies funds to the expansion, operation and evaluation of programs that improve recruitment, retention and success among UNCC engineering students from low-income backgrounds. The primary components of the program include partnership building with Title I schools within Charlotte, mentoring, comprehensive wrap-around student support services, and scholarships for qualified students. The program is designed around holistic student development theory and cultivating social capital through mentoring contacts and rich extramural experiences. The primary program objectives are: Objective 1: To increase the recruitment of low-income, academically talented students with demonstrated financial need who are pursuing baccalaureate degrees in engineering and enter the engineering workforce, or graduate programs in engineering. Objective 2: To increase the retention, student success, and graduation rates of low-income, academically talented students with demonstrated financial need who are pursuing baccalaureate degrees in engineering and enter the engineering workforce, or graduate programs in engineering. Objective 3: To study effective evidence-based practices and strategies of recruitment, retention, student success, academic pathways, and degree attainment in engineering among low-income, academically talented students.
