Preparing for Graduate School: Fostering Diversity and Success in History M.A. Programs

February 15, 2022 to May 15, 2022
The Preparing for Graduate School program will aid in the recruitment, application process, and retention of underrepresented minority students in History Master’s programs. According to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, just over 7% of all History Master’s degrees are awarded to Hispanics, while only 3.3% are awarded to African Americans. This latter number trails the undergraduate population of black History majors by two percentage points. At UNC Charlotte, the number of enrolled black graduate students in the History department is 10%, yet that still trails the undergraduate black population of 17%. This program thus aims to increase the amount of applications from members of underrepresented groups, aid those students in preparing successful applications for both admission and funding, and increase enrollment in History MA programs, both at UNC Charlotte and among other schools our students choose to attend.
