Zavala-Zavala

Zavala-Zavala is an opera composed by UNCC Music Professor Brian Arreola, set to a libretto (the words) by Anna Deeny Morales, Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University's Center for Latin American Studies. The opera dramatizes the family separation crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border in 2017, specifically the case of a Guatemalan grandmother who had her grandson taken from her by U.S. border officials after swimming across the Rio Grande river. The opera will be performed April 8, 2022, at the McClean Community Center, McClean, VA, and April 9, 2022, at the Kennedy Center, Washington, DC. Georgetown is convening panel discussions on art, immigration/migration law in the week preceding the performances.
