Statement on Mass Shooting in Buffalo, NY

A message to Niner Nation
Thursday, May 19, 2022

Dear Niner Nation,

We are horrified by the racist act which resulted in Saturday’s mass shooting in Buffalo, New York. Our deepest sympathies go out to those directly affected — along with thousands of others, including right here in our own community — who are experiencing the impact and trauma of this senseless act of violence.

Sadly, we have been here before. If you are feeling overwhelmed or fearful, know that you are not alone. We encourage students, faculty, and staff to use this moment to wrap our arms around one another, show compassion and patience, and give or take the space needed to heal.

Students, please seek assistance as needed from the resources available through the Center for Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). For faculty and staff, counseling services are available through the Employee Assistance Program. The Office of Diversity and Inclusion and Office of  Identity, Equity and Engagement are also available to support members of our community.

As our University strives to become a leader in diversity and inclusion we ask that you help us to safeguard our community. If there is ever a need to report threats or bias incidents, please contact the Bias Advisory Resource Team or UNC Charlotte’s Department of Police & Public Safety: 704-687-8300 for nonemergencies, or 911 for emergencies.
