International Teaching Assistant Evaluation and Training

The English Language Training Institute provides language evaluation and a support course for new graduate teaching assistants (TAs) for whom English is a second language. Depending on evaluation results, TAs will be placed in a specialized training course which assists with communication skills that are vital in the classroom, such as incorporating functional language cues, using accurate vocabulary, and improving pronunciation. New graduate assistants for whom English is a second language may be appointed as TAs only when the English Language Training Institute certifies that the applicant's proficiency in oral communication indicates that the appointment is appropriate. This is in accordance with UNC Policy Manual section 400.3.51G. English language assessments are offered at the start of every fall and spring semester.
